In your Energy Target settings, you have the option to toggle on/off Include Exercise. Toggling this setting ON adds any energy burned above your Baseline Activity Level to your daily Energy Target.
For simplicity, let's assume that you have set a Maintain Weight Goal and haven't included Thermic Effect of Food in your Energy Target.
At the beginning of the day your Daily Energy Target = BMR + Baseline Activity - Consumed.
If Include Exercise is toggled ON, your Daily Energy Target = BMR + Baseline Activity + Exercise - Consumed.
For example, at the beginning of the day:
- BMR = 1419 kcal
- Baseline Activity = 284 kcal
- Total Burned = 1703 kcal
Therefore your Energy Target = Baseline Target (1703) - Consumed (0) = 1703 kcal
If you have exercised (either logged exercise or imported general activity from a device), this will adjust your Burned calories:
For example, if you did 60 minutes of road biking (equaling 426 kcal):
- BMR = 1419
- Adjusted Baseline Activity = 266*
- Exercise = 426
- Total Burned = 2111 kcal
*Note that the Baseline Activity has been adjusted to account for time spent exercising.
Therefore your Energy Target = Baseline Target (1703) + Exercise Above Baseline (408) - Consumed (0) = 2111 kcal
Here's how we calculate Exercise Above Baseline:
- Baseline Activity = 284 kcal
- Exercise + Adjusted Baseline Activity = 692 kcal
- Exercise Above Baseline = 692 - 284 = 408 kcal
This ensures that your baseline energy target is static until you exercise above and beyond your baseline for the day. Therefore if you toggle OFF include exercise, your energy target will be the same as your baseline.
The same math applies if you have a Custom Energy Target set. If you have Include Exercise toggled ON, your Daily Energy Target = Custom Energy Target + Exercise Above Baseline - Consumed
To turn on/off include exercise:
1. Go to More > Energy Settings
2. Scroll down to Energy Target
3. Toggle on/off Include Exercise
